INTRODUCTION

The economic and social development of the world‘s poorest countries is perhaps the greatest challenges facing society at present time. Over one billion of the worlds‘ six billion population live in absolute poverty; the same number suffers various degree of malnutrition, and millions do not have access to safe water, health care or education. This poverty is concentrated largely in countries described as ‗developing‘ and coexists with the affluence enjoyed by the vast majority of people in countries described as ‗developed‘. Nigeria as a ―developing‖ country has her own fair share in the struggle to achieve a stable polity as well as achieving rapid economic development that would lead to food sufficiency for her teeming population, reduction in poverty, employment, wealth generation etc. These aspirations and desires is succinctly reflected in the policy of the current administration tagged vision 20
2020. According to the policy, by year 2020, Nigeria would become one of the top 20 economies in the world, shedding the toga of a ‗‘ developing economy‘‘ to become a‘‘ developed economy‘‘
Many critics of the government have criticised the policy as a mere wish list. They rightly pointed out that many similar vision statements had been made in the past, but failed to achieve the set target and there is nothing to show that the present policy would not go the same way. If past policies had failed and it is feared that the present one may fail, it would be, in my view, due to leadership. The right leadership would be needed to drive any vision to fruition. This paper‘s objective is to propose a leadership model that would lead to government of Nigeria and indeed government of any developing country to achieve a sustainable security and economic development
